5 Ways to Get the Bohemian Folk Look this AutumnPosted 29/09/2016
Retro is big this year, and interior designers are looking back to mid-century design classics for inspiration. Pretty fifties pastels and bold sixties prints are popular – but we seem to subconsciously associate the seventies with all things brown and ugly. However, there is one seventies style that’s making a comeback this autumn: the Bohemian folk look.

Taking its lead from a young generation who were able to travel to far-flung places like Asia and Africa, Boho style was born out of the exotic objects and ideas they brought back with them. In the wake of the hippie era it came to symbolise a change in British culture, celebrating a country that was becoming more culturally diverse and open to new ideas. The Bohemian folk trend was its own quiet revolution, toned down from the acid bright flowery sixties, and it’s experiencing something of a revival in 2016.

Perhaps there’s something about it that just appeals to us at the moment, bringing a burst of optimism and imperfection that jars with a drab world. Whatever it is, it’s the perfect way to brighten up your home this autumn. Here’s five ways you can bring it into your home.

1. Warm Metals

2016 has seen a big trend for metallics, and warm metals such as gold, rose gold, brass and copper are particular favourites. A few well-chosen accessories will bounce off the light, and give your Boho look a little luxe.

2. Print and Pattern

Interior designers are loving tribal patterns this season, and that plays right into Bohemian style. If you’ve been travelling, now is a wonderful opportunity to put an authentic piece at the heart of your home – but if not, there’s a whole wealth of flora and fauna jungle prints out there right now.

3. Light It Up

Lighting is hugely important to creating the right atmosphere. Get as much natural light as you can in the day, and as much warm light as you can at night. Tealights, lanterns, and of course, fairy lights, will give you that gorgeous warm glow to warm things up.

4. Raffia and Rattan

Bringing the natural world into your home is an important part of the Boho look – and today, we understand just how important it is to protect our environment. Raffia and rattan are natural and eco-friendly, and have an authentic exotic feel.

5. Shake It Up

The great thing about Bohemian folk is that it’s meant to be messy. Unfinished furniture, exotic print throws, overgrown houseplants – there’s an art to its undone look. Don’t be afraid to let things get a bit messy. It’s all part of the charm.
