The Complete Guide to PleatsPosted 25/01/2019

hand sewing curtain pleat

The sumptuous undulation of plush curtains is caused by the pleats. Pleats are multiple folds in the cloth, but they aren’t just there for show. Pleats serve a practical purpose as the air between the folds forms an insulating layer which traps heat keeping your home warm! There are four main types of pleat – Pencil Pleats, Pinch Pleats, Goblet Pleats and Box Pleats – let’s take a closer look at each type.

four types of pleat

  1. Pencil Pleats. A traditional and consistent pleat for an understated look.
  2. Box Pleats. Like pinch and goblet pleats, box pleats lend themselves to accessorising.
  3. Pinch Pleats. Slightly more decorative than pencil pleats, pinch pleats accentuate the quality and flow of the fabric.
  4. Goblet Pleats. A highly decorative and luxurious pleat.
