How to Make a Simple DIY Cushion Cover for ChristmasPosted 16/11/2015
Brighten up your home or someone else’s this winter with this incredibly simple DIY cushion cover. Super quick, super simple, it makes a stylish and thoughtful Christmas present, and it won’t cost you much, either! All you need is some time and attention and a fabric you love – and at LCB, we can help you out with that last one.

If you want to keep up-to-date with interior design trends, we recommend something from one of our stunning new ranges. The Georgian Gardens and Venezia collections are delicate eastern-inspired designs, and the Radiance Geometrics range incorporates striking modern patterns perfect for expressing your personality. However, if you’re creating a charming Christmas gift, go for festive scarlet and cheerful stripes: Baron Stripe and Timberley Textures combine bright reds with soft, lavish textures.

What You Will Need
Fabric
Cushion pad
Iron
Tape measure
Pencil and paper (newspaper works well)
Pins
Scissors
Needle and thread or sewing machine

How to Make Your Simple Cushion Cover
  1. Measure your cushion pad, and cut a piece of fabric the same size. If you’re a beginner, you might want to measure this out on paper first, and pin it to your fabric before cutting it. Add an extra 1cm for a seam allowance – you can always take it in later if the cushion cover is too loose. Before you cut your fabric, iron it; any creases will make your fabric into a different shape, as well as looking scruffy. Look carefully at the fabric’s pattern, and make sure the design is centred so that the cushion doesn’t look skewiff when it’s finished.
  2. Cut two more pieces of fabric: one should be the same width and at least half the height of the first, and the second should be the same width and at least three quarters the height.
  3. Now it’s time to start sewing. On the two smaller pieces of fabric, create a finished seam along one of the longer sides. Iron down about 5mm of the edge, pin in place and sew.
  4. Lay the larger piece of fabric down, right side up. Place the smallest piece on top, right side down; line up the long edge without a hem with the top edge of the big piece. Add the last piece on top, right side down. Line up the un-hemmed long edge with the big piece’s bottom edge. Pin at the corners and at each edge. Leave the middle flaps open.
  5. Backstitch the whole way around the cushion cover, 10mm from the edge. If you are sewing by hand, add a guideline first with a pencil to keep your stitches straight.
  6. Use the flaps at the back to turn the cushion cover inside out. Stuff the cushion pad inside and it’s ready to add a splash of cover to any room!
